List of my current FireFox ExtensionNow I know it's in vogue to create a list of "Best Of" or "Top Ten" FireFox extensions, but this list was created entirely for selfish reasons. I've created this list so when I have to install FireFox for the first time on a new computer I know which extensions to get without wading through the thousands of options (and bad extensions) that are out there to find the ones that I want. These are in no particular order.
- BugMeNot - Bypasses a lot of
login forms for news and other websites that require a user name and password in order
to view stories or other content.
- Adblock Plus - Blocks ads all over the net. Makes for a much better browsing experience. And a faster one too.
- Fasterfox - They say it speeds up requesting pages and FireFox in general, but I'm
not convinced. Then why do I install it? Because it has additional popup blocking built in
and I like all the popup blocking protection that I can get. And I like the nifty timer that
tracks "How much time" it's saved me.
- Flashblock - Now this
is absolutely one of my favorite extensions. Now, its no secret that I'm not a flash lover, but
this plugin almost makes it bearable to me. What it does is disable all the flash on a page
and give you the option of enable it by clicking a play button on it. This makes a huge number
of annoying advertisements disappear, and gives the power back to you. You can easily allow
a given site to automatically load flash if you want.
- Fission - Make your location bar work more like it
does in safari. So it acts as a progress meter as well as gives you locations of hrefs when hovering.
- Image Toolbar -
You know how in IE, if you put your cursor over an image, a little toolbar comes up which
allows you to save or print the image? This extension does the same thing, but makes it
entirely configurable, for instance, I turn off all of the icons by the "Save", and make it
smaller and appeare more quickly.
- KeyConfig - Add new mappings to keys in FF. For instance,
I like how on a mac, w closes a window so I can make w do the same thing.
- Nightly Tester Tools -
This extension is for people who test beta versions of FireFox and extensions, but that's
not what I use it for. It has a handy little feature that allows you to use extensions that aren't
validated for the version of FireFox you're using. So you can upgrade to a new version of FireFox
without worrying that a bunch of your extensions will be disabled.
- TabMixPlus -
Better session saving than the built in FF options, and many many tab options that should be built into FF.
